As promised… Here’s our simple weekly homeschooling plan by subject:

Writing:

• Conversation Journal with Mom (spiral notebook)
• Gratitude Journal (write 1 thing a day)
• Daily 6-Trait Writing, Grades 1-8 teaches kids how to really develop author skills. I personally recommend for Grades 3+.

Spelling:

• Building Spelling Skills, Grades 1-6 – I just read a post about a mom raving about how well this book worked for her son, and I agree. Weekly unit, meaningful practice all based around specific phonics rules and sight words.

Math:

• Math Fundamentals, Grades 1-6 is my go-to math curriculum. The lessons are so focused and short. We can easily do a unit or two every week.
• Daily Word Problems for a quick math warm-up and review using real-life math stories. E
• For Math grades 7+, Teaching Textbooks 3.0 is a clear winner for us!

Science:

• Daily Science, Grades 1-6 teaches weekly science concepts in 10 minute lessons that hold the kids attention.
•  STEM Lessons and Challenges, Grade 1-6 is perfect for Fun Friday and features 15 complete STEM units. The kids ask to do more!

History/Geography:

• We use History Pockets, Grades 1-6 when we want hands-on history activities
•  Beginning Geography, Grades K-2 is another great resource for short lessons with younger grade.

Language Arts:

• Language Fundamentals, Grades 1-6, for quick direct skill lesson and practice;
•  Grammar Galaxy is a WONDERFUL story-based language arts curriculum that applies language skills in real-life situations. You know how we LOVE learning through great stories over here!

Art:

• How to Teach Art to Children, Grades 1-6 is a complete art curriculum for elementary. While it is a colorful book, you can just print the few black and white reproducibles if you need them. This is a MUST- have book!

Thinking Skills:

• Critical & Creative Thinking Skills, (Grades 1-6) is a book my kids literally if they can work ahead. The themes are often seasonal and are just the right amount of stretching the kids’ thinking without frustration.

Oh…. I almost forgot! If you’re into using digital resources, Evan-Moor has uploaded over 16,000 lessons from all of these books (and 600+ more) into a lesson plan library called TeacherFileBox.

Wondering how we fit all of this in with a toddler/preschooler underfoot?

Here’s our KISS (Keep it SUPER Simple) plan:

We complete weekly units for Math, Writing, Spelling, and Language Fundamentals in 3 days. It takes us about 2.5 hours each day.

Then, we either have “Monday Funday” or “Fun Friday” to do the child-led, story or project based lessons – Art, STEM, History/Geography, Critical Thinking and Grammar Galaxy.

Day 5 is for errands and finishing anything else that needs to be done.

I know….What about reading???

THAT is something that gets a post (or two) all one it’s own another time.
