Pathways 2.0 Far From Shore Grade 4 Review
Literature-based lessons are such a fun way for kids to learn. And when the books are a high-interest topic for kids….kids can hardly wait to start the lessons!
When it comes to learning about the ocean, most kids (including mine) just can’t seem to get enough information about this fascinating habitat! Hence, the ever-growing stack of ocean books in our home (yours, too?)!
By fourth grade, most kids are ready for more substantial resources about how scientists really study the ocean environment. They have deeper questions and are able to make connections about how amazing life in the vast ocean really is.

Far From Shore: Chronicles of an Open Ocean Voyage by Sophie Webb is non-fiction story that reflects journal entries from the author’s experience from a four-month research expedition in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean. As both an artist and a “birder,” the scientific researcher shares her vivid detailed drawings from her observations of living on the open ocean.
Each journal entry begins with the date and exact GPS location of the ship. The kids can track the path of the crew on their voyage, which is a great geography skill reinforcement!
As an artist, Sophie Webb shares such an array of beautiful representations of some of the things she observed on her voyage.

Kids love learning about the ocean, so we were thrilled to receive a copy of Pathways 2.0 Far from Shore from Kendall Hunt Publishing to receive. Please note: I did receive these materials for free. I was compensated for my time. All opinions are my own.
Far from Shore kept all of us interested in learning more about Ms. Webb’s voyage. We all gained a deeper understanding about ocean expeditions, animal research, and of course, the aquatic animals! Both the illustrations and captions were excellent points of discussion for our family.
We found that activities from the lesson plans connected to the story and reinforced what we learned from reading Far from Shore. Connections like these help the kids practice and apply the skills to other activities provided in the Teachers Daily Lesson Guide book.
